MarsEdit - for WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger, etc. App Reviews

50 add

Compatible but not optimized for 10.7 Lion

Even if MarsEdit is the best blog editor I know, I miss the full screen feature for Lion. 4 stars on 5 because of that.

Fantastic

I hope u make it for joomla too…..plz ;-)

Blogging made simple and accessible

What a great new update! It’s fast, snappy, and didn’t crash on me even once so far. This application is just awesome. I have been trying out a number of different Mac apps for blogging. One criteria that needed to be met for me was the fact that an application would have to be VoiceOver compatible. MarsEdit is, to the full extent! Its simple, straight-forward interface and comprehensive keyboard shortcut set make it a very powerful and fully accessible tool for the occasional blogger as well as the one producing multiple blog posts per week or even day. I can highly recommend it!

Great app for Blog editors

MarsEdit is a great app for those wanting to write on their blog without having to worry about losing their work while using their blogs built-in web-based editor. With an uncluttered interface, a preview pane, local storage of my blog posts and other useful feature I find it hard to believe that I havent used MarsEdit up until now. Its such a great app with the likes of John Gruber (of Daring Fireball fame) using it for their work and the praise that it has gotten from various publications, such as Mac World (who awarded it an Editors Choice award).

Fun, easy and efficient

I used to write my blog posts with Microsoft Word or MacroMates TextMate. The problem with Word is that it creates horrible HTML that you have to clean up before pasting it into a textarea. With TextMate, I have full control over the HTML, but I have to do it all by hand, which can take a while. With MarsEdit, writing blog posts is simple and fun. I still have control over the HTML, but adding links, images and basic formatting is a breeze. Its the perfect blogging tool.

Everything you need

I bought this app after reading many reviews on blogging clients and I am thoroughly impressed. It has everything you need with a clean intuative UI that is really easy to use. I can manage all the blogs from my one desktop client now without having to navigate through the sluggish interface of Wordpress. Bravo on this app, highly recommend.

Recent update prevents posting to WP

My Wordpress site is self-hosted, and since the most recent update, its become impossible to post to WP - it returns an error message each time. Sorry, I am moving back to Live Writer (installed on the Windows side of my Mac).

Needs work still, but seems to be the best blogger app on the Mac

This app is good, although a bit overpriced in my opinion but maybe Im cheap :-P I definitely have some feedback which I sent the developer (and included below for reference) and he was quick to respond and everything, so development still seems ongoing which is great. Im excited to see the upcoming changes as the developer seemed receptive to some of the ideas. Areas I was thinking it can improve on as per my email to the developer… 1. Full-screen mode (found in Lion, Mountain Lion, etc) 2. Auto-refresh when opened instead of having to manually refresh the posts/pages after opening the app 3. Better support for scheduled post so there is at least some verbiage of a scheduled post date (nowhere to be found currently) 4. Ability to post to Facebook Page and/or Twitter at the same time (I know there are Facebook plug-ins, but this may be a workaround for those who dont want the plug-ins or have the ability to install the plug-ins themselves) as the blog post is posted 5. Make it easier to see Drafts from actual posts that are either posted or scheduled to be posted. Once those areas improve, then I see myself much happier with this application. NOTE: I use it strictly for self-hosted WordPress blogs at the moment.

Passable — in either sense of the word.

Could be much better; while the price is consistent with other blogging apps (or lower), I have been using MarsEdit for several years with no massively noticeable improvements on updates. I think there could be far better value for the money (I really began writing this review as I was searching the App Store for more options)—it is okay for the basics and gives a good HTML editor, but I still often find I have to go to WordPress to make simple tweaks that MarsEdit can’t handle, like borders on HTML images. If you’re expecting a replacement/equivalent for Windows Live Writer, MarsEdit isn’t quite as clean and straightforward yet. It’s okay, but I hope development is still occurring to make the product less cumbersome to use (three key shortcuts aren’t really shortcuts in my world—I’m used to cmd+K to paste a link.. not so in MarsEdit).

Great app too costly

They should not charge us this big amount of money for this app. Though its a great app.

Death to Blogo

Honestly, this thing was impressive 10 years ago, largely due to a complete lack of competition. And still so today! But a nice, modern update would sure rock. Just no subscription models!

Best there is

Ive been blogging for 4 years and tried various methods, and usually Ive ended up just using the online WordPress interface. The other Mac blogging clients just dont offer enough options to help you out; you still have to go online and tweak it. MarsEdit is fast and lets you fire off blog posts that are ready to go. It even has a browser bookmarklet if something inspires you. One star withheld because it has some glitches with formatting text around images.

Extremely capable yet very easy to use

I was looking for an easy to use blog editor as my HTML and blogging skills could charitably be called basic. The reviews on the web for MarsEdit were quite good but the way they were written made me think the program was geared more for experienced bloggers so I put it on the bottom of my "to try" list. It turned out that MarsEdit was the easiest of the programs I tried and had the richest feature set. MarsEdit allows you to either compose and edit your post in HTML or Rich Text and there is a very useful WYSIWYG preview window that pops up which allows you to see how your post will look on your blog as you type. Setting the preview window to match the blog type is dead easy. BlogEdit calls the feature that automatically adds HTML tags Macros. There is a basic set installed and adding your own is as simple as typing in the opening and closing tags you want to add and typing a keyboard shortcut if you want one. The email-like interface is familiar, clean, intuitive, feature-rich and a pleasure to use. I no longer dread composing my blog posts. Although experienced bloggers seem to think highly of MarsEdit it couldnt be easier for a beginning blogger to use. I had a question for the developer about buying through the App Store. His response was extremely helpful and lightning fast.

Amazing blogging tool

I have been using this app for about a week and I will never go back to anything else. It is literally the easiest way to blog. I was amazed at how easy it was to set up and use. It literally took less than 2 minutes. The web bookmarklet is my favorite part. I can easily grab bits and pieces of a text that I want to quote. Makes life easier. I just wish they had an iPad and iPhone app. I would buy it in a heartbeat. If you are on the fence about this app, get off and just buy it. Worth every penny.

Not what I expected for the price

MarsEdit has a ways to improve, and I hope it does for the price I paid. I would suggest going to their website for a free trial before purchasing this from the app store. I am left still longing for a Mac version of the Windows based Live Writer as that free blog writer has the features needed for a blog writing utility.

Best features, worth every penny

I am not a fully time blogger by any means, but Mars Edit is invaluable. The ability to edit values for custom wordpress fields alone makes it a no brainer for me.

very expensive for a very basic platform

very dissapointed with this...I cant believe I paid this much...the editing tools are specially very basic. Forget trying to edit a pic (resize, move) within the blog. ScribFire from firefox does everything this program does but for free...i wouldnt recommend it at all...

Good app, but needs improvement

Good app, but for the price being paid, youd expect a few more features to be available, like full control over syntax highlighting for HTML editing (i.e. HTML tag name colors are fixed to the color purple and cant be changed). The solution to this problem is to use the built-in feature of editing a post with your favorite text editor. As for being on par with blogging platforms such as WordPress, the post-format feature isnt supported, nor does it support commenting on posts, a feature which has been overlooked by all blogging apps. For a heavy-traffic website, a good majority of the time spent on the blog back-end is attending to comments. Publishing posts, in the grand scheme of things is a fraction of the time spent. In all fairness, some of these features are difficult to integrate or are exclusive to a single blogging platform. MarsEdit can reduce the time spent on the blogs back-end, but its not meant to be a complete replacement to your blogs built-in editor, which will always be ahead of any blogging app. Nevertheless, i have faith in the app, and as a web developer myself, you learn to have patience. Good job guys.

Nice, but..

This app is nice, but it doesnt support features from wordpress like post formats or featured images. If I need to set a featured image I have to login to my web admin for wordpress which is inconvient. For the price, you would expect this to be supported.

Highly recommended!

Im using MarsEdit to manage (at the moment) 8 WordPress blogs/sites. Its simply the best. I use it all day, every day. The markup macros are fully customizable and lessen the amount of time needed to post... and the Preview window template can be edited to match your site perfectly. Way back in the day, I used to manually upload images that I would utilize in posts, however with MarsEdits Media Manager and Upload Utility, its super easy to upload media right away - or at the time of posting ("Upload With Post"). The media manager can even tap into your Flickr account if you so choose! Highly recommended. 5/5
